What does a CASA Volunteer do?
CASA volunteer advocates come from all walks and stages of life to advocate on behalf of child victims of abuse or neglect. It's not necessary for a volunteer to have a legal or social work background - only a heart to speak up for a child in need.
Who can be a volunteer advocate?
Anyone who meets the following criteria is eligible to train as a CASA volunteer advocate. However, final selection is at the discretion of the CASA program.
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Must have a valid GA driver's license and proof of automobile insurance
- Must complete an application
- Must pass a background check: criminal and sex offender registry
- Must provide references (2 professional, 1 personal allowed)
- Required to interview with CASA staff
- Must exhibit the ability to communicate effectively - speaking with professionals and writing court reports and other correspondence
- Must possess mature judgement, high level of responsibility, and have sufficient time to complete necessary tasks to advocate for the best interest of the children we serve
- Must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction (includes class pre-work)
- Must complete mandatory court observation
- Must commit to serve for at least 18 months (preferred - until case closure)
- Complete 12 hours of continuing education each year
Each advocate must be able to work effectively with individuals from different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic status.
